RECOGNITIONS
Jill Carpenter, a fifth grade math and science teacher at Hutchison Farm Elementary, was recognized as the third LCPS participant in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Teacher at Sea program. Loudoun Education Foundation President Paul Lin, Executive Director Dawn Meyer and President Emeritus Fred Flemming spoke about the Foundation’s 15 years of service to the students of Loudoun County and its plans for the future.

Minutes; Construction Change Orders; Construction Status Report; Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative Easement and Right-of-Way Agreement – Arcola Elementary School; Art Equipment and Supplies for New Schools and Ongoing Needs IFB #175; Audio Visual Equipment for New Schools IFB #177; Duplo System 5000 Collator IFB #0715; Renewal of Property and Casualty Insurance RFP #02-B; Employee Assistance Program RFP #07P; Professional Design Services RFP #07J; Lease/Purchasing Financing for Vehicles, Network Equipment and Wireless Laptops RFP #08A; Toner Cartridges IFB#181; 2006-2011 Local Plan for Gifted Education; Annual Grant Application for the 2007-2008 School Year for the No Child Left Behind Act; Student Expulsions; and the Superintendent’s recommendations for licensed and classified personnel actions, including the following administrative appointments:
Jeffrey K. Platenberg as Assistant Superintendent for Support Services. Mr. Platenberg holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration from George Mason University and a master’s degree in business and technology from Webster University. He has served as assistant superintendent for accountability and information/communication technologies for Lexington County School District One in Lexington, S.C.; as chief operating officer for the Savannah-Chatham Board of Education in Savannah, Ga.; as director of facilities services for Richland County School District One in Columbia, S.C.; and as coordinator capital project management/budget and finance and senior budget analyst for Fairfax County Public Schools.
Timothy J. Flynn as principal of Belmont Ridge Middle School. Mr. Flynn holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Stonehill College in South Easton, Mass.; a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.; has completed certification coursework in school administration and supervision from the University of Guam; and is a doctoral candidate in administration and supervision at the University of Virginia. He has served as the principal of Buford Middle School in Charlottesville; as principal at V.S.A. Benavente Middle School in Dededo, Guam; as principal of Yigo Elementary School in Yigo, Guam; as assistant principal at Untalan Middle School in Barrigada, Guam; as assistant principal at Piti Middle School in Piti, Guam; as school counselor at Harmon Loop Elementary in Harmon, Guam; as unit coordinator and head counselor at Manville School in Boston; as a special education teacher at Massapoag School in Randolph. Mass.; and as an Army Reserve non-commissioned officer in Barrigada, Guam.

…setting of salaries for the School Board members taking office in January 2008. School Board members will be paid $20,000 per year with the chairman making an additional $2,000 per year.
...naming ES-18 in the South Riding Station subdivision, Liberty Elementary School.
...naming ES-19 in the One Loudoun subdivision in Ashburn, Steuart W. Weller Elementary School.
...naming HS-3 to be located adjacent to Mountain View Elementary School, Woodgrove High School.
...awarding the contract for construction of Creighton’s Corner Elementary School (ES-9) to Caldwell & Santmyer Inc. of Berryville, Va., in the amount of $14,677,424.
...returning $999,448 in surplus Capital Improvements Program (CIP) funds to the County of Loudoun.
...supplemental appropriations requests.
...deferred action on land acquisition for MS-5 and HS-7 until its August 14 meeting.
PUBLIC HEARING
A public hearing was held concerning potential condemnation of land for the site of MS-5 and HS-7, the Crerar Property and the Nicholas/Farkas Property. Betty Wheeler urged that another site be found. John Bacak and Ken Hovater said that a school site should be found as soon as possible. John Duncan Crerar the owner of the property asked that his property not be condemned. John Farell an attorney representing the property owners, asked that action on condemnation be deferred for 90 days. Kevin Turner questioned the process by which the condemnation was begun.
INFORMATION ITEMS
Planning and Legislative Services – Director for Planning and Legislative Services Dr. Sam Adamo presented the School Board Calendar for the 2007-2008 School Year.
DELEGATIONS
Noah Bergel, on the behalf of Jennifer Bergel, urged the purchase of the Miller property in Lovettesville for a school site. Jim Kiser urged the continuation of the firefighter/EMT program at Monroe Technology Center and support of its instructor. Karl Phillips explained the reason the naming committee for HS-3 suggested Woodgrove High School.
