Welcome to First Grade! My name is Mary Dyer, and I am thrilled to be a part of our First Grade team at Cool Spring. This is my nineth year on the team!!! My master’s degree is in Special Education from James Madison University; my undergraduate degree in is early education. My teaching experience includes kindergarten through third grade, in addition to fourth and fifth grade resource students. After grad school, I was offered a postion with the Department of Defense Dependents Schools, and taught in Germany for six years. I loved teaching in a foreign country, even though learning a new language and adjusting to a new culture was incredibly challenging. Having the opportunity to learn and teach with colleagues from all over the world was the best experience.
I strive to create a warm, calm, and orderly environment in which to challenge your first grader. I love reading all kinds of literature. I want your child to develop a love for reading and enjoy learning as well. We will work as a team to help your child go beyond their potential to be successful and confident.
My husband and I have two really great children. My daughter, Lauren, is a UVA grad and is now employed at an internet software firm in Mclean. She plans to return to Charlottsville next fall. My son, Andrew, is a recent graduate from Virginia Tech and a big Hokie fan. The UVA ~ TECH game is not always fun at our house!! Fall is one of my favorite seasons, so I am looking forward to football games and long runs on the bike trail.
I look forward to teaching your child this year! Please feel free to schedule an appointment if you have any questions regarding our program. My email is mary.dyer@lcps.org
