Welcome to First Grade!
I am excited to start the year together. I have been teaching at Meadowland for over 25 years. This is my thrity-first year of teaching. I have taught kindergarten, preschool, first and second grade. I have a masters in curriculum and instruction and concentration in reading. I recently received my ELL certificate. I have a daughter, Katie, who will be a junior at Meredith College. She is also a Meadowland graduate.
This summer, my family took a Disney cruise to Alaska. Katie and I hiked in the second largest rain forest in the world. We love Disney. As a matter of fact, you will see a lot of the Disney characters in our classroom. I love the aspiration of the theme “When you wish upon a star” and “Believe”. This is going to be our motto this year. “Believe in yourself.” Make the wishes of learning begin!
I have high expectations for a successful and great year and I'm sure you do as well. I hope to see you all at Back to School Night on Sept. 15. Let's work together as a team to make your child's year a wonderful learning adventure. I look forward to working with your child and seeing him/her grow in reading and writing. This is a truly exciting year to see such huge milestones in those areas!
Behavior plan: Students will have a clip with his/her name on it. All students will start out on Ready to learn. The student could move up or down throughout the day. The most important is how your child ended his/her day. The behavior plan is as follows with super student being at the top.

Our first units will be citizenship, safety, patterns, and night and day. We will be using literature across the curriculum to incorporate the standards of learning. Please take your child to the library to read and discuss his/her favorite story.
You can view upcoming units on our website so that you can be informed about the first grade curriculum. If you feel that you have something that you would like to share with us for a unit, please let me know. For example, while we are studying safety, if you have a career in this field or would like to share a special book concerning our unit, write me a note so we can arrange a day and time for you to share with the class.
I look forward to meeting you and having your child achieve goals. This should be a fabulous year! Remember you, your child, and I will be working together as a team. Let's make this year a fantastic one! If you ever need to contact me, please do so at 571-434-4440. You can also reach me at e-mail, firstname.lastname@example.org.
