The Emerick Earthsavers have two projects that are in need of volunteers immediately (Jan. 31, 2012) through the end of this school year, during school hours.
v Waste Free Lunches – Parent volunteers are needed to help encourage “packers” to use a lunch box or other reusable container along with a reusable, refillable drink bottle on set dates. On a monthly basis, volunteers will weigh the amount of trash during lunch and document our progress. Ultimately the goal is to have “zero” trash. Please visit www.wastefreelunches.org for ideas on how to reduce & reuse.
v 4th Grade Green Team – This is a parent led group of 6-8 Fourth grade students that meet approximately 1-2 times per month during their lunch period. The overall purpose of this group is to generate conservation awareness (energy education, watersheds, air pollution, etc.) in our school. We are in need of 2 parents to help lead the activities with this exciting group. No experience necessary. Susanne Ortmann, from the Audubon Naturalist Society, will be on hand to help with the group this year. Preference will be given to parents of children in Grades K-4.
The continuation of these projects is critical. Last year, Emerick was recognized by The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries for our environmental education efforts. In order for us to attain this honor again this year, these programs must be continued.
If you have any questions, would like more information, or can volunteer for these projects, please feel free to contact us.
