Please bring shorts, tee-shirts, and comfortable shoes to change into for the park after the competition is over! We will return to Belmont Ridge at 9:00 pm.--Have rides home promptly at 9:00 pm.
The River Hawk mile runs are scheduled for the following mornings.

The 8th Grade Chorus and Chamber Choir will perform their spring concert on Thursday, May 17, at 7:00 pm. The participants are to be in their choir outfits at 6:15pm in the Band Room.

This is a message from the library. Our used book sale is fast approaching and will be on May 29th, 30th, 31ST and June 1st . It is still not too late to donate books to the sale. Paperbacks will cost 50 cents and hard covers will cost a dollar. We have lots of different books on the sale like children’s books, middle and high school books, cookbooks, gardening books and books for adults too. Proceeds from the sale will be used to support the library activities and the Belmont Ridge book club. It will be a great opportunity for you to purchase summer reading material at bargain prices. Please think about buying used books at the sale and support our book club!

The Sixth Grade Chorus concert has been rescheduled for next Wednesday, May 16 at 7:00 pm. Students, please arrive in the Band room to rehearse at 6:00 pm an the prelude starts at 6pm.
If you are interested in playing chess with your friends, come play at Chess club. Chess club will meet today in room B-6. There is a late bus and please remember to tell your parents you are staying after. See you there!

Congrats to two talented hikers from the Ecology Club, Eric Torbert and Peter Hajdo, who hiked to the Raven Rocks lookout last Saturday. The Raven Rocks hike is a very difficult hike that requires great stamina and effort. The hike starts in Virginia and crosses into West Virginia before arriving at the Raven Rocks lookout. Excellent hiking Eric and Peter!
Our next Ecology Club meeting will be NEXT week, May 17.

Did you know that saving soda tabs can help sick children's families? Ronald McDonald House collects soda tabs and the money raised from recycling goes to supply housing to parents while their child is in the hospital. Congratulations to two Belmont Ridge writers who are Honorable Mention winners in the recently-announced Loudoun County Library "It's All Write" Fiction Writing Contest: 8th grader Michaela Flemming and 6th grader Leah Steiner. Michaela's story is entitled, "The Big C," and Leah's story is entitled, "Blood and Butterfingers." Congratulations to both girls!
Autism Awareness Riverhawk 5K & Kids Fun Run
Hi Belmont Ridge - Mr. Buttrick, along with Ms. Martin and Ms. Mezzino, We had the pleasure of coaching this year’s Academic Challenge team. The Loudoun County Middle Schools Academic Challenge is a yearly competition in which all 14 middle schools in our county send 8 elite 8th graders to compete and test their knowledge in Math, Science, English, and Social Studies.

The Rust Public library hosted the 3rd Annual Battle of the Books competition between Belmont Ridge, Eagle Ridge, and Smarts Mill middle schools’ after school book clubs on April 19th. We are very proud to announce that for a third year in a row, Belmont Ridge Book Club have won the Battle of the Books competition. (Show picture) Belmont Ridge students defeated the two teams by a margin of over 60 points, scoring 230 points. Smarts Mill came in second at 170 points and Eagle Ridge came in third at 160 points. Congratulations to our winning team for bringing the trophy home!

Along with the report cards you will receive in your 4th block class this afternoon, you will also receive a letter which lists the classes you've signed up to take next year. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you bring this letter home to your parents. If your parents want to make a change to your course selection for next year, they must email your counselor directly. April 13, 2012 - Today is a "B” Day
There is a brand new mystery in the library and you have to identify two mystery animals by observing their skulls and working on the clues provided. The last date to complete this mystery is April 20th and this will be the last mystery for this school year.
Color Your Plate! is the Cafeteria Contest going on from Monday April 16- Friday April 20, 2012. The Goal is to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed each day. Currently about 1,750 portions are taken per week, we want to triple that to 5,250 portions per week.
The Rules are as follows:
One raffle ticket will be given per transaction to each student (limit 4) who purchases a fruit or vegetable ala carte or with their meal.
You WILL NOT receive a ticket if you come back and say a ticket was never given to you, so make sure you receive it the first time through. You may enter the raffle more than once however you may only redeem one prize per day.
Drawings will be done daily during each lunch shift.

Did you know that April is Autism awareness month? Well to get involved we want you to light it up blue on Tuesday April 17. Wear blue to bring awareness to our community. In addition we will have a school wide walk for each grade level. So keep your eyes out for more information. Remember light it up blue on Tuesday.

This is the last meeting before the Battle of the Books competition next week and so it is important that you attend this meeting. If you are unable to attend this meeting, please inform Mrs. V before the meeting.

Monday April 16- Friday April 20, 2012. The Goal is to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed each day. Currently about 1,750 portions are taken per week, we want to triple that to 5,250 portions per week.

Did you know that April is Autism awareness month. Well to get involved we want you to light it up blue on Tuesday April 17. Wear blue to bring awareness to our community. In addition we will have a school wide walk for each grade level. So keep your eyes out for more information. Remember light it up blue on Tuesday.

We practice from 3:30-5 after school on Mondays and Wednesdays, and we train to run local community events. Attention book club members! The book club will meet for a mandatory meeting tomorrow in the library after school. This is the last meeting before the Battle of the Books competition next Thursday, April 19th. If you are unable to attend this meeting, please meet with Mrs. V before the meeting.

On Saturday April 21, 8 of Belmont Ridge's talented 8th graders will be participating in the 3rd Annual Loudoun County Middle Schools Academic Challenge. This yearly event brings together 8th graders from all 13 middle schools in the county to compete to see which middle school has what it takes to be called the champion!

Quick reminder that Belmont Ridge is once again asking our students to PAY it FORWARD by participating in a school wide diaper and wipe drive to benefit homeless children right here in Loudoun County.
Mobile Hope is a full size bus that travels throughout the county bringing HOPE to homeless children in our area, many of these children living in shelters, doubling up and even in their family cars. It is very sad to see a van pull up with several children crammed in the back knowing that this single vehicle is the only place they have to call home, or for the children living in a shelter who have no where to really call home. Mobile Hope is responding to the needs of this very vulnerable population; every child that gets on the bus will get a bag of food for one week, personal hygiene items, coats if needed and a special gift so they know there is always HOPE! Mobile Hope has an urgent need for diapers and wipes right now and we are asking all of our students to 'pay it forward" by bringing in diapers and wipes for these children in need.

House collects soda tabs and the money raised from recycling goes to supply housing to parents while their child is in the hospital. If you would like to participate, bring your saved tabs to Mrs. Robertson in House A.

Congratulations are extended to both the Belmont Ridge Chamber Choir and to the Belmont Ridge 8th Grade Chorus for both making straight Superior Ratings from all judges at the SOL Middle School Choral Festival this past Saturday.
The judges were so impressed with the students' mature and professional behavior, their great dynamics and balance, their lovely and musical sound, and with the beautiful soloists: Sydney Fox and Emily Snyder. They were amazed at the ability of our 8th grade Chamber Choir accompanist, Noah Moore-Sobel as well. One of the judges left his post and came up on stage to shake his hand.
Thanks for representing Belmont Ridge so well with both your fantastic singing and your wonderful behavior! You certainly made us proud!!!!

Belmont Ridge continues to pay it forward in April with another community outreach project. On April 11th we will launch The Diaper Dash in conjunction with the Stone Bridge Cluster to support the continued efforts of Mobile Hope and LINK in Loudoun County. Belmont Ridge is responsible for collecting diapers and wipes in this effort that will continue through April 21st. The culminating cluster event takes place at Stone Bridge on April 21st with a Community Shred/Food Drive. The community is encouraged to come with food and up to 6 xerox boxes full of shredable papers. Attention students! The book fair ends this Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. We have restocked books and popular items like the u v secret pens, hand pointers and such, so come to the library before they are sold out again. The last shipment of pens and erasers will be here this afternoon. So don’t miss out !

The Belmont Ridge 7th Grade Boys Basketball Team made won their semi-finals game on Friday night by beating a fast-paced Smarts Mill team with a score of 53-31. The dynamic duo of Ben Kling and Jonathan Hough Combined for 27 points with 15 and 12 respectively. Unfortunately the boys fell a little short in Sunday's Championship game against River Bend losing a heart breaker with a score of 30-24. The boys finished the season with a combined record of 11-2.
Hey, heart healthy students of Belmont Ridge. Did you know that people who are physically fit, like athletes, have hearts that can pump about three times more blood than someone who isn’t in shape! This is because regular physical activity increases the size and power of the heart muscles.
Knowledge is power, tell someone about this heart healthy fact of the day.
Also, start planning your grade level, block time, Hoops for Heart basketball teams. Games will be played on March 29th and 30th.

There is a brand new mystery in the library and it is about two mystery animals. Show the bobcat skull picture. This is the skull of the first mystery animal and this animal belongs to the cat family. It lives in the Northern American regions, mostly in wooded areas, as well as semi-desert, urban edge, forest edges, and swampland environments. Show the beaver skull picture. This is the skull of the second mystery animal. It belongs to the rodent family and can be found in North America, Europe and Asia. It is a semi-aquatic animal and likes to live near water. Come into the library to solve this new mystery.

Did you know that saving soda tabs can help sick children's families? Ronald McDonald House collects soda tabs and the money raised from recycling goes to supply housing to parents while their child is in the hospital. If you would like to participate, bring your saved tabs to Mrs. Robertson in House A.
