Important Physical Education Information

Participation

Students should attend all physical education classes.  Students should not be kept out of physical education for failing to complete their classroom assignments.

If students must be excused from an activity class, sedentary activities should be provided.  Even some form of written work relating to the ongoing activity can be assigned to the students who must be excused from physical education for illness, injury, or disciplinary reasons.

 Medical Excuses doctor note

Excuses from physical education should be written by the parent and sent to school with the child. The physical education teacher will honor such excuses.  Since physical education classes meet three times per week, excuses from the parent would suffice for one week, however, a note from a physician is required if a student must refrain from activity for longer than one week.

Appropriate Dress shoes

Appropriate dress for physical education classes means wearing comfortable clothing and shoes, which have rubber soles, are firmly secured to the feet; for the girls, wearing shorts or long pants is strongly recommended.  Restricting physical activity because of improper dress or shoes would be considered appropriate.

The Physical Education Standards of Learning identify concepts, processes, and skills for physical education in kindergarten through grade 10 for Virginia's public schools.
The five strands for physical education are Skillfull Movement, Movement Principles and Concepts, Personal Fitness, Responsible Behavior, and Physically Active Lifestyle.  Standards of Learning in each strand are sequenced and progress in complexity from grade level to grade level.
             1.      The student will develop muscular strength and physical fitness.
             2.      The student will develop efficient body control and movement.
             3.     The student will acquire appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills  necessary for healthy daily living.
             4.    The student will demonstrate safety awareness and good safety habits.
              5.   The student will develop a positive attitude toward sportsmanship with respect for the talents and weaknesses of others.
               6.  The student will participate in activities that encourage the development of a positive self-image.
               7.  The student will develop a sense of individual and group responsibility.
              8.   The student will develop a healthy attitude toward physical activity.
      9.  The student will develop an appreciation for physical activities, which can be pursued during leisure time and can contribute to lifetime fitness.
