We are excited to announce that our Accelerated Reader (AR)  Renaissance Place Real Time
 is up and running.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading program that all of our 2nd – 5th Grade students are required to participate in throughout the year. We are very excited to announce that we are rolling out a web based AR software program that will allow our students access to over 145,000 tests.

What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?

AR is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz with 85% or higher is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.

Children using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.

Teachers and librarians help your child choose books at an appropriate reading level that are challenging without being frustrating, ensuring that your child can pass the quiz and experience success.

In most cases, children really enjoy taking the quizzes. Since they’re reading books at their reading and interest levels, they are likely to be successful. This is satisfying for most children. Best of all, they learn and grow at their own pace.

How can I help my child become a better reader?

As with anything, performance improves with practice. Encourage your child to read at home. Create a culture of reading in your household by reading with your child, starting a home library, visiting your local library or bookstore on a regular basis, letting your child see you reading, and discussing books that each of you has read. When reading with your child, stop and ask questions to be sure your child comprehends what is read. Reading with your child, no matter what the child’s age, is an important part of developing a good reader and building a lifelong love of reading and learning. Make learning a family affair!

How will I know how my

child is doing?

Since our school now has the Enterprise version of Accelerated Reader, you can now access your child’s AR information in Renaissance Home Connect™ from a computer with web access. You will be receiving a letter home very soon that provides information about how to access your child’s account. Once in the program, you can view your child’s progress toward goals, points, and books read. You can also access AR BookFinder to search for titles of interest and AR BookBag to make of books you would like to read.

You can only access information about your child. Student’s will not be able to take tests from home.

**Students in 2nd-5th grade will be required to check out one book a week from the library that is in their Reading Range. Reading Ranges are determined by classroom teachers and will be adjusted at least once per nine weeks as students meet their personal reading goals. These ranges are used by students to select books that are neither too easy nor too hard. Once a student has finished their AR book, they will take an AR Test in their classroom to check their reading comprehension. Ideally, students should score 85% or higher on several tests before making book selections in the higher end of their Reading Range. We work together with classroom teachers to ensure that your child is making great choices during book selection. Students are also allowed to get one “free choice” book a week.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call Heather Pfundstein or Missy Wiedow at 703-957-4350.
